Blade Runner three-button PVD (black) Microma lcd vintage watch

This is an original 3-button Microma pvd liquid crystal watch from about 1979. It has a replacement strap but the case is in it's original finish and the acrylic front is uncracked. All three buttons still work well and are nice and springy.

These take two big old-model batteries so you will have to see if the module inside is still functional. This is the screen accurate version with the two grooves on the sides of the case.

Earlier smooth-case versions are thinner and if you look carefully at the screen-grab photo I have included above you will see Harrison Ford wore the later, thicker, grooved body watch exactly like this one. Rick Deckard's wristwatch is a Microma 3-button digital in black'PVD' finish with a liquid-crystal display. You can clearly make out the gold-edged acrylic face and black Microma branding on the watch in film.

The Microma was the first commercially available watch to use a liquid-crystal display, designed by Jean Hoerni and manufactured by Seiko. The heart of the Microma was the Intel 5810 CMOS chip. The 5810 was the first SoC (system on chip) processor produced. Intel were able to fit functions including; timing, lcd driver and digital/analogue function into a single silicone wafer chip.

Unfortunately Intel was not successful in the watch market because of the rapid decline in prices for digital watches. The head of the company, Gordon Bell, often referred to his own three-button version as his'15 million-dollar watch' such was the cost of bringing the LCD technology to market. At the time of manufacture in the late 1970's this was an expensive watch. The item "Blade Runner three-button PVD (black) Microma lcd vintage watch" is in sale since Monday, October 19, 2020.
