Was a renowned pioneer in the development of vacuum discharge tubes. Crookes invented the Crookes tube to study gases, which fascinated him.
His work led to the discovery of the electron and the invention of X-ray machines. The Crookes tube is a vacuum-sealed glass container capable of carrying electricity.
This is an antique, large, extremely rare and very early Crookes tube made between 1898 to 1915. His apparatus was used to investigate the path taken by electrons, or cathode rays as they were known.
The electrons are emitted from a central element towards the glass. As the electrons collide with the glass they fluoresce. This apparatus was able to show that electrons travel in straight lines. The overall glow of the apparatus is caused by the excitation of the remaining gas molecules in the tube. PLEASE NOTE: My description is based on my research and not personal knowledge.
Also, it is important not to actually test such old antique glass laboratory equipment as discharges from these tubes could be dangerous. However, in excellent physical condition. A real museum piece for demanding collectors or prop studios. Excellent pre-owned condition, especially for something so old and fragile. Will be well packaged for protection. Guaranteed to be as described and shown. Most items are guaranteed to be as described & shown. If you were not satisfied for any reason please let me know and I'll work hard to make it right.
